Sophie & Tom’s Wedding Reception
Last night saw me in a venue I haven’t visited for a while – the Anchor at Little Downham, for Sophie and Tom’s wedding reception.
It’s a lovely village hotel/restaurant/pub with a beautiful function room built onto the back which is ideal for the smaller wedding reception or party. It’s also a venue where a massive light show would look out of place, so it’s a fairly small setup to achieve the right results for sound and lighting.
I’d been emailed a small playlist of around 20 songs requested by Sophie and Tom’s guests a couple of weeks ago…..and I knew it was going to be a good night!
It consisted mainly of the “party classics” which was a refreshing change for me as a DJ. Weddings of recent years have had an unwritten rule where the usual suspects aren’t allowed to be played. I understand this (to an extent), but these particular songs (we’re talking of tracks such as September by Earth Wind and Fire, Sweet Caroline by Neil Diamond and anything by Abba) are classics for a reason….people know them and dance to them – which surely is what a party is all about isn’t it?
Let’s face it, there’s nothing which has been released in the past couple of years which will still be being asked for in 10 or 20 year’s time!
Normally with small gatherings such as this (there were only around 60 guests), it can be really hard work to please everyone. On this occasion, the opposite was true and the dance floor was full for the entire evening. The big surprise was that a good chunk of the evening was made up of ’80s and ’90s club classics. It was a real treat to watch the guests relive their youth!
The midnight finish came around far too quickly on this one – we could have gone on for a lot longer but East Cambridgeshire’s licensing officials dictate otherwise unless you’re in the City Centre.
So….all the best for a long and happy future together Sophie and Tom….it was a real pleasure to DJ for your special evening
